Bridlington Bow Out of This Season’s FA Trophy

Despite a late fightback, Bridlington Town lost 2-1 at home to Colne in the First Qualifying Round of this season’s FA Trophy.

Mike Thompson opted to make three changes from the side that drew 2-2 with Ossett United last time out.

Harry Webster came in for the injured skipper Matty Plummer, with Jack Griffin taking the armband for the evening. Versatile Australian Noah Stokes and winger Jack Yates were also drafted into the starting lineup. Former Hull City academy player Harvey Carew was named on the bench for the first time since joining the club in the summer, as he continues to return from injury.

The Seasiders were behind early doors, when Webster lost his man in the area, allowing Owen Watkinson to turn well and finish nicely into the right corner of the goal, opening the scoring for Colne after eight minutes.

The visitors had a few chances in the first half, with James Hitchcock making a number of good saves to prevent it being any more than 1-0. Brid did nearly find an equaliser in unorthodox fashion, as a mix up at the back was a Colne man almost poke the ball into his own net, but instead it trickled just wide of the post and out for a corner. The opening 45 minutes saw Colne go into the break with a 1-0 advantage.

Colne had yet more chances to score in the second half, but were prevented by a goal-line clearance from Griffinand an excellent last-gasp block from Jack Bulless. The second goal did come eventually, as substitute Jack Doherty rounded Hitchcock and finished into the empty net with just 10 minutes to go.

A very tidy finish from Ali Aydemir, who curled the ball brilliantly into the bottom right corner in the 87th minute, brought one back for the hosts. Despite pushing in the six minutes of injury time, Town couldn’t find the equaliser and Colne made the three hour journey back home with a place in the next round secured.

Bridlington Town will be looking to bounce back on Saturday, as they return to league action with a home game against Carlton Town, with kick off at 3pm.
