Brid Start Road To Wembley With Home Clash

Bridlington Town begin their FA Cup campaign at home to Whitley Bay, of the Northern League, on Saturday.

Mike Thompson will be looking to get off to a good start as he prepares for his first competitive fixture as Bridlington Town gaffer. Standing in his way will be Northern League Division 1 opposition Whitley Bay in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie.

Though the hosts go into the game following a 4-2 defeat at home to Hull City Under 23s in their final pre-season game, Thompson says he is pleased with his team's efforts this pre-season. Last Saturday’s outing proved to be Bridlington’s only pre-season defeat, picking up two wins and three draws in their previous five fixtures. The most notable victory being a 3-0 win against Newcastle Benfield, in which three second half goals secured a promising win for the Seasiders.

Thompson took over from Brett Agnew this summer, following the club’s dramatic, last-minute escape from relegation. As such, a complete rebuild took place, with only seven players being retained. 12 players were brought into the club, the most recent of which were goalkeeper Ben Crosher and striker Jake Martindale, both following successful pre-season trials. Bridlington should have a full strength team available, with key players who had been unavailable returning including Matty Plummer, Jack Griffin and Lewis Dennison. All key players- Matty Plummer is Thompson’s newly-appointed captain - taking over from Pete Davidson who departed for Tadcaster Albion; Jack Griffin returns to Queensgate for his second spell and Lewis Dennison netted the final minute penalty that ensured the club remained in the Northern Premier League East Division.

As for the visitors, they got off to a good start to their league season with three points and a clean sheet in their 2-0 win at home against Penrith. They will host Bishop Aukland on Tuesday night and as such, Bridlington will be the first away trip of the competitive season for Nick Gray’s side. Pre season was mixed for Whitley Bay, as they played six games, five of which were away from home. They managed two wins, a draw and three losses.

Both sides will be aware of the financial possibilities that come with an FA Cup run, so both managers will be eager to progress to the Preliminary Round.
