Record numbers of Minke Whales have been spotted off the Yorkshire Coast this summer.
Yorkshire Coast Nature say 81 individual whales were identified in a single day last week.
Richard Baines from the group says it's been a bumper year for sightings.
The Whales are know to visit the Yorkshire Coast each summer from July onwards with a peak usually expected in late August or early September.
Richard Baines, from Yorkshire Coast Nature, runs boat trips to see the whales, he says they arrived a little later than usual this year but seemingly in greater numbers he said:
"On the 25th August Ian Boustead, local birder and cetacean recording volunteer for the North Sea Wildlife Trusts partnership along with Matthew Hobbs made a fantastic count of 53 individuals from their watch point above Staithes. This almost doubled the previous record count.
On the 27th August our boat trip from Staithes led by Margaret Boyd and skippered by Sean Baxter found an amazing number of whales ‘too many to count’ was one guests summary. Simon Ward, working as a volunteer for the North Sea Wildlife Trusts partnership on our boat trip, managed to log at least 25 individual whales despite the tricky challenge. "
Richard says that the best was yet to come though with record numbers of the Whales recorded on August 28th.
