
Those out late last night were treated to a spectacular display of the Northern Lights, distant lightning and regular meteors in the night sky.
People gathered to try and capture the Aurora at popular viewing spots like Filey Brigg and Jackson's Bay near Scarborough.
We captured a series of pictures from Oliver's Mount in Scarborough including this one with the Aurora and lightning caught in one shot:

Some locals were already outside looking for shooting stars in the Perseid Meteor Shower and were treated to the addition of the Northern Lights and some distant flashes of lightning offshore.
The latest Met Office forecast suggests we could be treated to another display later, weather permitting:
"Ongoing Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) influence will wane slowly through Tuesday, August 13. Another CME enhancement is possible early August 13, this will bring a chance of visible aurora to Scotland and parts of northern England overnight."
