ANPR Camera's Having an Impact on Cross Border Crime in North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire Police say Criminals who travel in to the county are being thwarted by the use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras and by closer working with neighbouring police forces.

The North Yorkshire policing area borders on six other policing counties, the North Yorkshire force say that around 20 percent of crimes in North Yorkshire are committed by people who live outside of the county boundaries. They say Cross-border criminals are responsible for a wide range of offences, from theft and poaching, to serious organised crimes such as child sexual exploitation.

Alex Butterfield is Chief Inspector for Specialist Operations at North Yorkshire police, he says the ANPR cameras are helping tackle cross border crime.

As a vehicle passes an ANPR camera, its registration number is read and instantly checked against database records of vehicles of interest. Police officers can then intercept and stop a vehicle, check it for evidence and, where necessary, make arrests.

North Yorkshire Police say the use of ANPR in this way has proved to be important in the detection of many offences, including locating stolen vehicles and uncovering cases of major crime. It also allows officers’ attention to be drawn to offending vehicles whilst allowing law abiding drivers to go about their business unhindered.

Chief Inspector Alex Butterfield says the border with East Yorkshire has seen some especially successful operations in recent months.
