
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is celebrating it's 50th anniversary as the annual steam gala gets underway today.
The railway's 50th steam gala gets underway today with 12 locomotives in action over the next four days.

The 50th Anniversary Steam Gala event timetable see services run each day of the event between Pickering, Levisham, Goathland and Grosmont stations along with services to and from Whitby station. The full timetable is available from this link to the NYMR website
Luke says there will be a number of guest locomotives working on the line this week.
The LNER A4 pacific locomotive 'Sir Nigel Gresley' in BR Blue livery, is arriving today and will be in action from 22nd - 24th, thanks to the Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust.
The other visiting loco's in action this week will be
- Great Central Railway and David Clarke Railway Trust’s BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 No. 92214.
- BR Standard ‘Riddles’ 4MT No. 75069 thanks to Severn Valley Railway
- The 75069 Fund and Caledonian Railway 2P No. 55189 courtesy of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society.
Luke says that this weekend's golden gala will see the railway deploy all of it's volunteers as it delivers a busy schedule of activity.
During the weekend stations along the line will be hosting exciting events of their own such as the Annual Steam Gala Beer Festival which sees Goathland Station offering a wide selection of real ales from local breweries (Thursday 11:00-17:30, Friday & Saturday 11:00-23:00 and Sunday 11:00-22:30. Cash & Cards Accepted).
There will be live music from Time is Tight at Goathland Station on Saturday evening from 19:30 to 22:30.
The Station Tea Rooms and Levisham Tea Hut will be open for refreshments.
Scarborough and District Railway Modellers will be in the Learning Centre on Platform 2 at Pickering Station. SDRM is the long-established local modelling club, having formed in 1978. They will be exhibiting a number of layouts in the popular 00 and N gauge scales, showing what has been happening in the hobby over recent years – including sound and digital control to name but a few. Entrance to the models is only £1 and accompanied children are free.
Trade Stalls will also be at Pickering Station, including DPP Model Railways, specialising in second-hand and pre-loved railway items. Model Market, model railway enthusiasts and suppliers with a particular passion for DCC and DCC Sound. joining them are Fundraising Stalls from The Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust, Lambton Locomotives Trust (LLC), Yorkshire Wolds Railway and BR Class 8 Steam Locomotive Trust.
The Dame Vera Lynn Fundraising Group will also be in the Learning Centre on Platform 2 at Pickering Station where it will be possible to see what progress is being made on the locomotive and discover how you can support its overhaul. Visitors will also be able to see the locomotive tender at Pickering Station Carriage & Wagon apron alongside the new location for The Friendly Miniature Railway (£2 per person to ride on board).
A selection of Vintage Stationary Agricultural Engines will be at Levisham Station.
