Seamer Station could get some major upgrades if a County Council bid for levelling up funding is successful.
North Yorkshire County Council has bid for £25m of levelling up funding to help create a new car park at Seamer railway station, with access to the A64, a new bridge over the tracks plus lifts and better pedestrian access.
The bid is tied to other submissions for improvements to Thirsk and Scarborough stations.
The county council’s executive member for highways and transportation - Councillor Keane Duncan - says if the cash is awarded it would provide significant benefits.
The car park would have direct access to the A64, the project would also see the installation of a new footbridge of the tracks, new lifts and better pedestrian access.
A report presented to the county council's executive last week said:
"At Seamer station we will provide a new pedestrian and cycle link connecting the station to residential sites in the west, a new three span open footbridge across the rail line and A64 including lifts to platforms 1 and 2 and a new station car park to the east of the track on to the A64. The proposals will complement National Highways proposed shared use path along the A64 which finish at the Dunslow Road roundabout.
The scheme will deliver key access enhancements for users, improve safety, create increased access to employment sites and business opportunities and increase station passenger demand and, subsequently, revenue. This scheme is estimated to cost £25.2m"
The authority has also bid for £8.4m to support Scarborough's Station Gateway project and £5.4m for projects at Thirsk station.
County Councillor Derek Bastiman has welcomed the application for funds
The county council says the works at Seamer Station would improve safety, enhance access to work places and business opportunities and increase station passenger demand.
The bid for levelling up funding has been submitted as a single application encompassing all three projects (Seamer, Scarborough and Thirsk), if successful then the county council will be required to provide 10% of the funding from it's own sources.
