200,000 Households Missing Out on Water Bill Help in Yorkshire

Sunday, 11 December 2022 07:00

By Matthew Pells with additional reporting from Joe Gerrard, Local Democracy Reporter

Two Hundred thousand households across Yorkshire could be missing out on help with their water bills.

Yorkshire Water says low income households could be eligible for their social tariff but says it has no way of directly identifying those customers.

Head of Corporate Affairs, Paul Carter, says as the cost of living increases they want more people who might be eligible to come forwards.

The company says it thinks there are 200 thousand households across Yorkshire that could qualify for it's social tariff.

Paul Carter form the utility form says finding those people is a bit of a challenge

Paul says there is over £100m of help available to bill payers.

Paul Carter says the company is working with a number of partners to try and reach out to people who may qualify for the social tariff adding:

“We’ve allowed charities such as Citizens Advice to register people on our social tariff on their behalf.

“Our other schemes to help people include letting them sign up to a Breathing Space.

“That means that customers who are in debt can press a pause button so no one will chase them for 60 days and we pay their fees and charges in that time too.

“The people who were finding it hard before are finding it even harder now.

“We’ll need to deliver what’s going to be required of us in the coming years in the most efficient way possible but also make sure that in this cost of living crisis we support our most vulnerable customers.”
