North Yorkshire Police say they have arrested 104 people for drink and drug driving in North Yorkshire and York this month.
The force launched it's Christmas drink and drug drive campaign and December 1st.
At the start of the campaign, they committed to proactively patrolling the area in marked and unmarked vehicles to intercept drink and drug drivers. They also warned people that we would be conducting static roadside checks.
Officers say:
"We’ve been out in force every day this month. We even arrested eight people for drink or drug driving on Christmas Day.
This year’s campaign focused on encouraging people to "save a life and call it in". Thank you to everyone who has provided us with information about potential drink or drug drivers so far.
As we head into the final couple of days of our campaign, we’re reminding people to plan their journey home.
The campaign officially ends at midnight on Sunday 1 January 2023. And although the Christmas campaign may have finished for another year, we will never stop our work to take drink or drug drivers off the roads."
To launch this year’s campaign, the police worked with North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service to demonstrate a mock road traffic collision to show the harsh reality of drink and drug driving. Emmerdale actor Mark Charnock, who plays Marlon Dingle, participated in the scenario which involved fire fighters cutting him out of vehicle.
“It’s not worth one pint… “🚫“It’s not worth one pint… “🚫 The words of Mark Charnock who plays Marlon Dingle in Emmerdale. Today, it’s the launch of our annual Christmas drink and drug drive campaign in partnership with the York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership. This year’s campaign is supported by Mark Charnock who bravely agreed to be involved in a mock road traffic collision. We’ve put Mark through this experience to show the harsh reality of drink and drug driving. During last year’s campaign, there were 137 people arrested for drink or drug driving. From the 137 arrests, 120 were men and 17 were women. 72 people of the 137 were charged with an offence. And 25 of the arrests were made following a road traffic collision. From today, we’ll have extra patrols out on the roads across North Yorkshire to try and intercept those who choose to drink and drug drive. We’ll also be conducting static checks at the side of the road. Drink and drug driving costs lives, so this year there’s a big focus on calling it out. We’re asking you to “save a life and call it in.” If you believe that someone is driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs, then please call us on 999. One call could be all it takes to save a life.
