As part of Scarborough Pride celebrations, the Old Parcels Office Art Space has invited a young artist and curator Tom Coates to curate exhibition of work by LGBTQIA+ emerging artists from across the northern region.

Tom is no stranger to Scarborough; he has fond memories of family holidays here and his work was included in ‘Call That Art’ at the OPO in 2018 and 2019. Tom said “When I got the invitation to curate a show at the Old Parcels Office Artspace, I jumped at the chance. Since I showed my own work here in 2018 the space has been transformed and it now has a growing reputation for showing exciting contemporary art.”

Artists included in the show include:

Rochelle Asquith (she/her) who lives in West Yorkshire.
Tom Coates (he/she/they) artist and curator of the exhibition.
Kai Edwards (They/Them) a non-binary sculptor.
Joel Hague (he/him) a Scarborough artist specialising in printmaking and zine-making
Victoria Phoebe Gill (they/she) who was born and lives in Leeds.
Thomas Griffiths (They/He), co-director/curator of GLOAM an artist run space in Sheffield.
Tiegan Handley (they/them) who studied at University of Leeds.
Liberty Hodes (They/Them) based at the NewBridge Project in Newcastle.
Phee Jefferies (she/her) who studied at Leeds Arts University and is based in Leeds.
Lady Kitt (They/Them) a disabled artist, research and drag king artist.
LUCE (She/Her) who studied at Leeds Art University and lives in Doncaster.
Frankie Mazzotta (They/Them) from Elmsall a small mining village in West Yorkshire.
John James Perangie (He/They) a multidisciplinary queer artist.
Nathan Wackett (he/him) a queer artist, curator and educator from Scarborough.

Sally Gorham, Chair of the Charity that runs the OPO said “The title of the show ‘Pride + Joy’ sums up everything about the exhibition. Tom’s selection of work by emerging LGBTQIA+ artists fills the room with a sense of joyful celebration. To quote from the Museum of Modern Art in New York ‘The history - and future - of art does not exist without LGBTQIA+ artists’ and so we are delighted to have the opportunity to put on this important exhibition as part Scarborough Pride.”

The exhibition has been made possible with the generous support of Yorkshire Coast BID, Scarborough Pride and public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
